Visiting Vienna last winter, we came to love ordering glühwein or mulled wine at the Christmas markets, both red and white.  We tried the mulled wine with Cointreau and even the mulled wine with tequila.  It is such a cosy feeling to be drinking a mug of hot wine while standing around in the cold.

This recipe tastes like Christmas in a bowl, completely delightful.

Serves 6

Preparation and cooking: 10 minutes cooking, 7+ hours chilling time

Ingredients:

  • 250 ml/8 fluid ounces water
  • 250 ml/8 ounces granulated sugar
  • 300 ml/10 fluid ounces red wine
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 orange
  • 1/4 cup of port

Directions:

  1. Put the water and sugar in a saucepan.  Using low to medium heat, bring to a boil, stirring often until the sugar dissolves.  Put aside to cool for 30 minutes.
  2. Mix the remaining ingredients together in a bowl, then add the cooled sugar syrup.  Cover with plastic wrap and chill at leat 4 hours, ideally overnight.
  3. Pour the chilled mixture into your ice cream machine and churn according to manufacturer’s directions before using a spatula to transfer the sorbet into a freezer proof container.  Freeze at least 2-3 hours before serving.
